Warehouse Management System
This includes the tracking of raw materials and finished goods. Major components include receiving,
locating, picking, shipping, and cycle counting. This technology operates as spread spectrum radio frequency
systems updating host systems in real-time. At the heart of the WMS is a network of RF handheld and forklift
mounted units. Because the system is RF, all data is validated the moment it is collected. Barcode scanning
is employed where possible.
Receiving
This provides an automated means to receive raw materials and finished goods into a warehouse. Raw materials
are received against purchase orders (POs) and items and quantities are verified. Finished goods are received
from production. Barcoded item labels and/or pallet labels are printed for items not containing a barcode.
Receipt transactions are created and sent to the host for update of the appropriate files.
Locating
Used to assign a warehouse location to raw materials and finished goods. Locations are generally barcoded.
Workers will scan the item or pallet label and then the location label. If items are moved they will be
relocated using this same function. The WMS knows what locations are available and can direct workers in a
quick, efficient manner. Dedicated or random location schemes are available. Storing by location organizes a
warehouse, makes picking faster, provides a means to validate inventory, and allows for efficient cycle
counts or physical inventory.
Picking
This allows workers to pick raw materials for production and finished goods for shipping. Data collected
will relieve inventory and produce picking lists and bills of lading. Order information will be downloaded to
the WMS to allow for validation of goods picked. Supervisors will have visibility of orders on an inquiry
screen and will determine which orders will be picked and assign them to workers. Workers will be directed to
locations and items can be picked on a FIFO (first in first out) basis, bin location sequence, or other
picking algorithm.
Shipping
Shipping is used to validate that correct items and quantities are being shipped and loaded on the proper
truck. Information gathered here can also be used to produce advanced ship notices. The WMS will alert the
worker of any missing or incorrect items. Shipping transactions are created and sent to the host for update
of the appropriate files.
