Barcoding
A barcode is a machine-readable symbol used to encode information in order to automate a business process.
Examples of business processes are retail sales, shipping and tracking, inventory management, warehouse
management, asset tracking, and automated data entry.
To provide synergy within industries, standardized barcoding symbologies have been developed for most
business processes. For example, the retail industry uses UPC (Uniform Product Code) symbols to process all
goods in a retail store.
The barcoding standards are published through organizations such as AIM International, Uniform Code Council, and EAN International.
